What is Dental Filling (Bonding)?
Composite fillings, one of the most common dental treatments, can be used for both treatment of damaged teeth and increasing the dental aesthetics.
Why Is Filling Necessary?
The most common reason for needing a filling is to treat a tooth that has been damaged by caries. It is not just tooth decay that fillings are used as a treatment. They can also be used to repair a cracked, fractured, broken or worn tooth.
Bacteria that feed on food residues in areas that we cannot reach while cleaning our teeth cause caries. These caries can progress unnoticed and without any pain. In order to diagnose and see such problems in early stages that you cannot feel, a detailed examination and radiographic techniques are required and you should definitely go to a dental check-up on a regular basis. Thus, any caries will be treated as early as possible.
As tooth decay progresses, it creates spaces in the tooth that we call cavities. If the cavity caused by dental caries is left unfilled, the caries can progress further, causing severe pain and eventually the complete loss of the tooth. After the caries is cleaned, a leak-proof filling is made into the existing cavity, preventing the spread of the caries and any pain associated with it, and the tooth can function normally again.
How Is Filling Made?
As the first step in the dental filling treatment, the tooth and its surroundings are anesthetized with local anesthesia. This prevents you from feeling any pain during the treatment. Then, using various dental instruments, the existing caries in the tooth is cleaned and the space where the filling will be placed is shaped. The main material used in filling is composite. Since the composite is tooth-colored and malleable material, its aesthetic appearance is restored along with the health and function of the tooth.
A filling treatment session usually takes about 30 minutes.
How Often Should The Filling Be Changed?
Depending on your eating-drinking and oral hygiene habits, the fillings can normally stay in the mouth for 5-15 years without any problems. In case of wear, cracking or discoloration, they may need to be renewed.
