Cleaning and Periodontal Diseases

What is Dental Stone (Calculus)? How is It Formed?

Calculuses are formed as a result of the hardening of the sticky bacterial plaque that accumulates on the teeth as a result of not cleaning them completely and correctly. This hard plaque cannot be removed from the teeth by brushing and requires a professional cleaning with various tools.

If the calculus is not cleaned, an inflammation starts in the gums first. This inflammation is recognised by bleeding gums during brushing. In severe cases, spontaneous bleeding will also occur. In the next stage, gingival recession will begin and even resorption will be seen in the bone. As a result, even though the teeth do not have caries, they will be lost because the bone connections are gone.

Is Dental Cleaning Harmful?

There is no harm in getting your teeth cleaned. During cleaning, plaque and tartar on the teeth are removed, but no abrasion is made on the tooth tissue. The reason for this common misconception is that people who have their calculus cleaned feel like their teeth have shrunk. The person, accustomed to the accumulation of tartar that covers the teeth for a long time, thinks and feels that his/her teeth’s shape is like that. Therefore, it is very natural for them to interpret the form of their teeth after cleaning (free of calculus) as “my teeth have shrunk”.

Our experienced dentists will professionally clean your teeth from calculus and plaque, remove stains and keep your gums healthy. They will also give you special oral hygiene training so that you can continue your routine care.

Gingivitis

It is the most common type gum disease. It is a gum infection that occurs when bacteria inflame the gums, causing the gums to become red, swollen and bleeding (especially bleeding when brushing teeth).
If gingivitis is not treated, it can turn into periodontitis, an advanced gum disease.

In periodontitis; with the separation of the gums from the teeth, infected cavities are formed.
If periodontitis is neglected or left untreated, the bones, gums and tissues that support the teeth are destroyed. Eventually, even if the teeth are not decayed, they may begin to wobble, fall out, or need to be extracted because they have now lost their supporting tissue.

The prevention of these severe problems is actually very simple regular oral care and regular dental check-ups.
